go green, eat vegan

Anonymous: I have been vegetarian for 10 years, and have always considered going vegan. I've tried eating vegan in the past, but have failed mostly because of the lack of support from my friends and family. I'm wondering what was the most difficult part of going vegan for you, and if you have any advice for me that might help me take the much needed next step? For the record, I think it's amazing that you're so passionate about being vegan, and you're definitely a wonderful person for it! :)

That’s awesome, 10 years is a long time! I’m sorry about the lack of support from your friends and family, that definitely makes things really difficult - but kudos to you for trying ◠‿◠

The most difficult part of going vegan for me was losing the convenience of grabbing food anywhere. It was hard being in high school and going out to eat with my friends and either not being able to get anything or being a pain in the ass and asking to go somewhere else (still can be difficult in university). My mom also went vegan with me, so that made the transition much, much easier.

I think my advice to you would be to take things slow - I know you’re already vegetarian (so meat isn’t a problem) but try cutting out eggs first, or limiting the amount of dairy you ingest to two or three times a week. Going vegan is easier if it’s a gradual change. As far as the unsupportive family and friends go, I think you just need to ignore them and worry about yourself. Try not to let them get to you. Or you could try to educate them on the topic, but sometimes that’s a lost cause (however, you could also change someones views on the food industry).

Thank you so much, that’s very nice to hear :) And good luck to you!
